Beach Volleyball originated in the US in the 1920's, and later crossed the Atlantic Ocean into Europe. In Brazil, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries, beach volleyball developed even further. 


In 1951, a Beach Volleyball Tour was held at five California beaches.

In 1965, the California Beach Volleyball Association was established, and a Beach Volleyball Open was held at eight local beaches.

In 1976, the first Beach Volleyball Championship was held in California.

In 1979, professional beach volleyball became an occupation, producing some really excellent professional beach volleyball athletes.

In Feb., 1987, the International Volleyball Federation recognized “First World Beach Volleyball Championships” were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In 1988, the International Volleyball Federation officially established the World Volleyball Federation, and began preparations for the World Beach Volleyball Series Championships.

In 1989, the first World Beach Volleyball Series Championships was held in Brazil, Japan, and the US.

In 1993, the International Olympic Committee named Beach Volleyball as one of the official sports of the Atlanta Olympic Games.

In 1996, the first Olympic Beach Volleyball competition was held from July 2-28 on an Atlanta beach.

Are there differences in the regulations for Beach Volleyball and Indoor Volleyball?

The Beach Volleyball basic regulations, court size, volleyball size, scoring, and service right exchange regulations are basically the same as those of Indoor Volleyball, but the Beach Volleyball court has no service area or front & back line limits

When did Beach Volleyball begin to develop in China?

Beach Volleyball began to develop in China relatively late. From the late 80’s to the early 90’s, China Volleyball Magazine held several popular National and International Beach Volleyball Invitationals. In 1993, after the International Olympic Committee formally recognized Beach Volleyball as an Olympic Sport, the China Volleyball Association began holding official National Beach Volleyball Competitions in 1994, and sent a team to participate in the World Beach Volleyball Championship for the first time in 1997.
